Gaura has been at New Gokul since 2002 and for most of that time was the farm supervisor. He began with no formal training and quickly rose to become an integral part of the goshalla's cow protection project. He is now leaving to protect the public as a PCSO with City of London police, and will be part of the team looking after public security at the Olympics.
Oops, poor Dharma is having to take some time off from his training due to an injury.
Dharma, our youngest boy (except Kalki) began his training as an ox yesterday. We asked him to keep a diary of his training from day 1 to his first time pulling the bullock cart. Read on for his experience...
Laxmi gave birth yesterday, at about 4am, to a beautiful little bull calf. Read on for pictures and the story of his first day.
I was half hoping there would be rain yesterday, and half hoping it would be sunny and warm. I wanted rain because there is so little grass, and our poor cows need it to grow as fast as possible so they can have a good old munch and stay out on the fields 24/7. On the other hand, I wanted nice weather so that lots of people would come and see our Letting the Cows Out day. But the cows won, and it was drizzly and overcast all day. So for all those people who didn't get to see the day, here is Letting the Cows Out 2012 in pictures...
People who work with cows (at least those paying attention) have always known that cows have friendships. They get on well with some cows and they dislike some cows. Their social lives are amazingly similar to humans', with the same kinds of unspoken rules and understandings that we have. It has even been scientifically proved in a PhD study by a lady called Krista McLennan from the University of Northampton.
Mark the date in your diaries and calendars: April 8th. Not only is it Easter Sunday but it is the day we will be letting our cows and oxen out onto the grass after spending the winter months in their barns. We will be having a special open day with the Deities themselves in attendance. Last year was a lot of fun and a great success, please come and join us this year!
The outcome of Draupadi's post mortem has led to a new goshalla policy regarding the feeding of the cows. This will become effective immediately, so please read for further details.
Regretfully, I have to write today with very sad news. Our faithful magic cow, Draupadi, left her body yesterday and is no longer with us here at New Gokul.
